The championship tilt for the QA late summer league was a hard-fought battle between two exhausted teams, as Bat Attitude emerged victorious with a 24-20 win over Sodo Mojo at the Dahl ballfields. It's their second Underdog championship, having also won the fall season in 2021.
Both teams had to win two games earlier in the day to get this far. Bat Attitude defeated Catch Balls Not Feelings and Masterbatting Octopuses; and then Sodo Mojo, who ended up playing three consecutive games with very little in the way of a break, advanced by beating The Bomb Squad and the top-seeded Panthers. "I tweaked my lower back on a play in the first game," said Mojo leadoff man Tyler Yi, "so I was actually kind of hoping we'd lose to the Panthers and I could go home. But, you know, this is fun too." Yi then staggered slowly back to his dugout in search of hydration. "So thirsty..." he muttered.
Meantime, Bat Attitude had a break of a bit more than 2½ hours, which they used to fuel up with a meal at a nearby tavern. "Plus beer," said outfielder Yuichi Watanabe. "Wait, were we not supposed to have beer?"
Suitably refreshed, Attitude responded to Mojo's 2-run top of the first with an immediate home run by team captain Ryan Hollis and plated two more in the frame to take a 3-2 lead. They expanded the gulf in the second and third, ending that frame with a seemingly comfortable 12-5 advantage. But Mojo would not go quietly into the rapidly approaching night—they erupted for eight runs in the top of the fourth, the extra tally coming on an aggressive tumble into the plate by 3B Brent Vogel after chugging around the bases behind runs 6 and 7. The score was then 13-12 Mojo and things weren't looking so great for Bat Attitude.
For about three minutes. Attitude responded by putting up their own max-runs inning to go ahead 19-13 and never looked back. With three more runs in the 5th and two in the 6th, they survived a late comeback attempt by Mojo as the sunlight faded over the expansive park.
"Everyone played a part in this win," said Hollis. "Stacy kept getting those perfect-hop hits on pitches above her head; Nick dove for balls all afternoon in the field; Yuichi, Jonathan, Ray, Blair, Drew, everyone came through with big hits." Said outfielder Stacy Crandall, "We came together as a team. Everyone did their part. Well, not Frankie, but everyone else."
Regular catcher Frankie Estep chose to miss the playoff day of games entirely, apparently having better things to do. "She's at some poolside in Italy or someplace, some villa," Stacy said while rolling her eyes and making air quotes around "villa." "Like going to Europe is cool or something. Whatever. I'm going to Manila next week but you don't see me missing softball."
Hollis credited Sodo Mojo with a fine effort on the other side. "Those guys are really good," he said. "They gave us a real run for our money." He then held up his Underdog Champion Wristband. "But we got these."

Just a Bit Outside was the clear favorite going into the championship game against a shorthanded opponent in Illegal Lineup. However, Lineup managed to hold their own through most of the game, keeping things to a one-run deficit until the last of the 6th, when JBO opened up the lead to the eventual final score of 13-10. Both clubs managed to squirm out of trouble with opportune defensive plays throughout, making for an exciting final contest.

Look at This F#&%$ing Guy mounted a comeback victory against Bats Amoré for the midcore championship, overcoming a 6-run deficit to win 14-12. Home runs were the difference, as that's one thing the great defenders of Bats Amoré could do nothing about. Double plays, running catches, and scoops out of the dirt at first were the order of the day, but in the end it wasn't enough to carry the Bats to the finish line. All in all an outstanding effort by LTFG, who earlier had defeated the surprising Baby Spring Mix to advance to the final game.

Pitches Be Trippin capped off their storybook season with a championship on Friday evening at Lower Woodland Park. The champs entered the night needing two wins to secure the title, and in both contests their offense was the star of the show.
The semi-final pitted them against the formidable Vicious and Delicious. The two teams had met in week 2 of the season and played to a 16 -16 tie, representing the only minor blemish on their otherwise perfect season. But here would be no tie this time. Pitches cruised to a 31-18 victory with Adrian D leading the way at the plate with 7 RBIs.
The final matchup against Balco Bombers proved to be more of a test. Balco sent home Caught in a Pickle in the first semi-final of the evening, giving them time to rest up and watch game 2. While Pitches Be Trippin’ jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up, the game was close until the end. Heading into the bottom of the 6th the lead was only 2 runs, but the champs offense stepped up again. Pitches put up 6 runs in their final at-bat with an impressive rally, which was kicked off by Allison H lining a double down the left field line that stayed just fair. It was one of many hits on the night for Allison, who was named player of the game for her performance. A scoreless top of the 7th, capped off by a leaping catch by shortstop Josh L for the 3rd out, sealed the 21-13 win.
Hot and humid night added a little heat to the spicy game between the #1&2 seeds. First inning started out hot with 4 and 6 out on the board. Followed up by 1 and 2 it was a 5-8 game in the 3rd.
I’d hit that hunkered down and started getting on to take a one run lead into the bottom of the 7th. Tsunami made waves but not enough in the end. Great game y’all! Good plays and attitudes.
Bat fielders held control over the game from start to finish. With great pitching and lock down defense..they were able to hold cascades hot bats at bay. Once they found their sticks in the 4th inning, they could start to feel the championship vibes coming their way. They were able to finish the last inning strong and came away victorious!

Bad Company had the advantage—they had clinched their spot in the finals by defeating Friends With Benefits in the 1:30 contest and therefore had a breather before returning to the field fort the 6pm championship bout. Big Bats, meanwhile, achieved their entry without any time for a break, having beaten New Kidz on the Block immediately before in the hot and humid Magnolia Field afternoon. Even so, Big Bats put up a good fight in the final, a low-scoring game featuring good defense all around that Bad Company managed to have one 6-run frame in to give them a bit of a cushion going into the final inning. They needed almost all of it too, as the Bats rallied for two-out runs to creep within four before Bad Co. finally wrapped up their title with a 12-8 win.

After punching their card to the championship game earlier in the night with a dominant victory over Bombers, Dickbat knew the real challenge lied ahead. Coming off the bye as the number 1 seed, Big Stick Swingin' was looking to close out their remarkable season with a championship. Unfortunately for them, Dickbat had other plans for the night. In a truly back and forth match up all night, everyone at Westmoreland knew this game was going to be decided in the final inning. Such was the case when Dickbat found themselves down 21-19 going into the bottom of the 7th. Nonetheless, Dickbat kept their composure and knocked in two runs to tie the game and set themselves up for the win. With runners on second and third, Ben from Dickbat took his spot in the box and was ready to celebrate. He sent a line drive shot down the first base line which allowed the winning run to score with ease and give Dickbat their championship victory in walk-off fashion. Congratulations, Dickbat!

It was anyone's game, until “Where my PITCHES at?” scored four runs late in the game to give them the lead. “Swingers” came right back and scored two runs of their own to make it close till the end. But “Where my PITCHES at’s” defense stayed strong in the last few innings and prevented “Swingers” from scoring another run. “Where my PITCHES at’s?” incredible teamwork and impressive defense gave them the edge they needed to win the championship 5-3!
Congratulations to “Where my PITCHES at?” on becoming the Late Spring ‘22 Tuesday Softball Champions and winner of the $50 to Streets Pub and Grub!
Tsunami held strong to make the championship game by 1 run in the semifinal!
The championship game started with an 11-0 start and came down to the final inning comeback to take the lead and held off a strong offense to ultimately win the game!!!!
Great send off for the captain Gerard with a championship!!!!!
After making short work of Sluggin'Beans in the semifinal, Thundercats took on The Reinforcers for the spring season softcore title. After trading scoreless innings with fine defense by both sides, the Thundercats broke through first for three runs, then eventually built up a 7-0 lead after 5 frames. It appeared the last game of the season would end up a laugher, but instead the Reinforcers struck back in the 6th, tying the score at 7 and only stopping there because of the run Cap for the inning. The big comeback couldn't be extended into the final inning, however, and the 7-7 tie held into the home 7th. Thundercats led off with a base hit and would load the bases for player of the game Will Moore. Will lofted a fly hall to medium-deep right-center field that was caught for an out but proved deep enough for the winning run to cross the plate on the sacrifice fly.
It was a disappointing defeat for the Reinforcers, who fought hard to defeat Scared Hitless in their semifinal game. That contest was a seesaw affair that featured several lengthy innings played in steady rain before finally reaching an end with an 18-15 Reinforcers victory after nearly 2 hours of play.
Team leaders Cole Soreano and Tino Ferrer set a fine tone for their respective squads and made for greatly enjoyable games to close out a fine season of softball. May both the Thundercats and Reinforcers return to Underdog softball for future seasons of sportsmanlike play!
“Benchwarmers” are the Thursday Softball Champions of the Spring ‘22 season, after defeating “Bearicorns” 10-0!
“Benchwarmers” entered the playoffs as the heavy favorite to win the championship. They were the #1 seed and it looked like no one would be able to stop them, but “Bearicorns” were not going down without a fight. The “Benchwarmers” defeated “Bearicorns” in their previous matchup during the regular season, so “Bearicorns” were ready to exact their revenge. The game started out with the “Benchwarmers” scoring a couple runs in each of the first two innings, and not allowing “Bearicorns” to get anything going offensively. The “Benchwarmers” have been impressive on the defensive end all season long, but it was their offense that gave them an edge in the championship. The “Benchwarmers” offense caught fire in the 4th and the 5th inning scoring 8 runs to give them a 10-0 lead going into the last inning. It looked like all hope was lost for “Bearicorns”, but they were able to get a few runners on in the last inning and put pressure on “Benchwarmers” defense. However, the “Benchwarmers” were able to hold them off and won the championship 10-0!
Congratulations to “Benchwarmers” on becoming the back-to-back Thursday Softball Champions and winner of the $50 to Field House Sports Pub!

Braden Pence topped off an incredible 8-run 3rd inning for High and Outside with a towering grand slam home run.
This championship game was close to the very end. With the score tied at 11, High and Outside added two more in the bottom of the 6th. Bad Pitches Only tried to keep up, but could only muster one run in the 7th, falling short 13-12. Close finish!
Top seeded Paws and Claws came into Sunday needing two wins to secure their championship. First, the semi-final game pitted them against 5th seeded Hot Balls Summer, and it went down to the wire. Hot Balls Summer scored 4 runs in their final at bat to tie the game at 14. That set the stage for Meg O’Neil to cement her status as a Underdog softball legend when she came to the plate with 1 out and runners on first and second. Prior to leaving the dugout Megl called her shot like Babe Ruth, telling her teammates “I’m going to go win this.” And that's exactly what she did, as she stroked a single to score the runner from second base to send her team to the championship with 15-14 victory.
In the championship, Paws and Claws faced the vaunted offense of Look At This F$%@ing Guy. Needing to neutralize the powerful bats of their opponent, they turned to star Leftfielder Jared Wright… and Jared came to play. Over the course of the game, Jared tracked down nearly 10 fly balls. He made running catches, diving catches, and sliding catches all over the outfield and was truly the star of the show. Thanks to Jared’s defense, Paws and Claws jumped out to an early lead and never gave it up. Taking home the title with a 19-10 win.
At one point down to Bad Company 20-10 in the middle innings of the semifinal game, the Arbronauts rallied back, taking advantage of a series of misplays to tie and eventually beat BC 21-20 for the chance to take on Pitches Be Trippin' in the final game. P/3B Josh Wofford hit two home runs, one an inside-the-park job, to lead the Arbornauts to their 17-9 win. When presented with their championship wristbands, injured Arbornaut Mindy Tolstedt, cheering her club on from the sidelines, was sure to get her piece of the championship pie. "One of those is mine!" she said. "I paid good money for that."

A big first inning for the Balco Bombers put the game away early. Solid pitching and defense, and a loud offense helped the Balco Bombers put away the number one seed Masterbatters and solidified their championship.

The undefeated #1 seed I'd Hit That entered Monday night with some work left to do. The powerhouse team needed two victories finish off their historic undefeated season and take home the title. Despite the near freezing temperature, they came in hot!
In game 1, they defeated Hot Balls Summer 20-15 thanks to an 8 run bottom of the 5th inning. The offensive explosion came at just the right time, breaking open a game where the score was tied at 12. The eventual champs notched 3 home runs in the inning, including one by Player of the Game Samantha T.
Upstart #6 seed Pancake Batters awaited them in the final. In a game that was marked by great defense on both sides, I'd Hit That gradually extended their lead to 10-3 and never looked back.
What a team and what a season!
Entering the final game of Winter season a perfect 7-0, Andy's Kids took the field in frigid conditions against Big Dingers for the championship. The cold helped to keep the game a low-scoring affair, but the two teams traded leads and played fine defense all evening long. Both sides featured great glovework, with the highlight play of the night a running over-the-shoulder catch of a sinking shallow fly ball by the Dinger shortstop. Big Dingers led 7-2 at one point, but Andy's Kids rallied to tie it at 7 and then go ahead 10-7 before running into trouble in the 7th. But the trouble was short-lived as the defense turned a critical bases-loaded, game-ending double-play to secure the win with a final score of 11-7. Everyone on Andy's Kids contributed to the victory with bats and/or gloves. "Except Nick," said captain and pitcher Andrew Green. "Nick was useless."
Having gone a perfect 8-0, what's next for Andy's Kids? Rumor has it they will return...in the spring season.
